About the Assessor

Weber County Assessor - Cheryl V. Madson

The assessor is in charge of valuing real estate and personal property for ad valorem taxation. There are over 97,000 parcels of property in Weber County. About 75,000 of these parcels are improved most of which are termed primary residential properties. Included in that number are agricultural buildings, storage buildings, mountain cabins, and secondary homes. Setting a value for all these parcels is an ongoing process depending on the state statutes requiring a review of property characteristics on a five year cycle. In addition to the real property, there are estimated to be 8,000 personal property accounts, as well as 3,000 mobile homes.

Cheryl was born and raised in Malad, Idaho. She married Mike Madson, who grew up as a farm boy in Malad. They have four married daughters, and ten grandchildren. Cheryl is working at writing the 'great American novel' in her spare time. Besides writing, she likes to walk her treasured mini dachshund, read, do needle work, and go on road trips with her wayfaring husband.

Being hired by the former Weber County Assessor, Mike Monson to appraise real estate turned into not just a job, but Cheryl's career. She received an appraiser's designation from the highly prestigious International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) in 1983, and is currently a Utah Certified Residential Appraiser. The land manuals still being used in the Assessor's office were in part written by Cheryl.

Cheryl believes service is the most important product the Weber County Assessor's office can provide to the people of Weber County. No one likes to pay taxes, but Cheryl has always been on the side to favor fairness and equity to the taxpayer.  Hoping to emulate the diplomat who can tell you where to go, and inspire you to enjoy the trip, she believes good service will make paying taxes an easier burden to bear.
